The Hardy Mount Royal is a European plum (Prunus Domestica) selected for it's good winter hardiness and fruit quality. This open-pollinated seedling originated from Quebec and fruits in Zone 3, outperforming the standard Mount Royal, which typically requires protected Zone 4 conditions. It shows hardiness where standard Mount Royal plum experiences winterkill at around -37°C, making it an excellent choice for Prairie growers and other cold-climate regions.
From our taste tests here at the nursery, Hardy Mount Royal delivers excellent flavour on par with its parent. Fruits are approximately 5 cm (2") with purple skin that turns dark blue-purple when fully ripe. The freestone pit releases easily from firm, juicy, sweet, and aromatic green flesh. Great for fresh eating and preserves. The tree is self-fertile and ripens in early September, with good keeping quality compared to most plum varieties.
